15 Year Blanket
Earlier this month we celebrated a stitch in time.
It was 15 years since we had our first Crafty Sundays session and it called for a project.
A handmade one of course!
About 40 woolcrafters contributed to the 15 Year Blanket
Crafty Sundays came about when a local spinner suggested people could gather on a weekend when the Tarndie Woolshop was open. Her spinning friend from Lara backed in the idea and brought some friends too.
There was no structure to the Sunday afternoons, just a place to work on woolcraft projects in the company of like-minds.
Over the years we’ve admired all types of woolcraft projects. It has been a chance to share tips and information encouraging crafters to delve deeper into the expanse of rabbit holes that woolcraft can take you.
It was clear any type of woolcraft challenge was achievable with the skills and enthusiam that turns up every month for Crafty Sundays, so we decided the project to celebrate our 15 years of crafty communion would be a blanket.
The only stipulation was to create a 6inch square using our 8ply 100% Polwarth wool yarn (from Tarndie or elsewhere).
A flood of squares ensured - knitted and crocheted, with some using the 5-stitch cast on increasing each row to 6 inches on one side, then decreasing to get the diagonal effect.
Some squares have intricate Japanese stitch techniques while others have cute sheep motifs. Some of the woolly squares are straight-forward garter stitch – each one reflecting the maker at a moment in time.
All of them of have warmth and intent. It’s such a good thing to make for a shared purpose.
The first 72 squares make up the 15 Year Blanket.
The amazing Faye Hector (aka Crochet Faye) took up the challenge to stitch it all together.
Using the Natural Polwarth Manna Gum 8ply, she has spent a good chunk of 2025 fitting borders and linking the squares. She sees the time spent as her “contribution to the cause”.
The 15 Year Blanket measures approx 110cm x 130cm.
