Class Level: Intermediate

Technique requirements: Experience stranded colorwork and knitting a small diameter piece in the round.

Mary Jane Mucklestone’s signature Fair Isle knitting class.

$385 including GST, morning & afternoon tea. Not including yarn or lunch.

Booked out.

Description:

Liven up your Fair Isle knitting; spend the day exploring color and pattern! This course introduces the basics of color theory and how to use its principles to guide your color choices.

Learn about the use of color over the years in traditional Fair Isle knitting and move beyond, developing your own color schemes.

Analyze how different color combinations can completely change a motif's appearance.

Learn what makes traditional Fair Isle knitting different from other world traditions, and how traditional methods make the work efficient.

Explore variations of holding the yarn, understand the concept of “yarn dominance”, and feel confident choosing and adapting pattern motifs.

Knitting a simple stranded wristlet or fingerless glove will illustrate these new concepts. A full day allows students to knit a substantial piece, learning as much from their classmate's work as from their own.

Supplies to bring:

6 to 12 colors (more colors = more fun!) of fingering weight yarn with a mixture of darks and lights. Non-superwash wool is preferred; Shetland wool is ideal. 25-90m (27-98yds) of each color yarn, bring all your odd bits; 3.25mm (US size 3 ) dpns or your preferred needles for working small diameter pieces in the round; tapestry needle; scissors; stitch markers. Graph paper and colored pencils, if desired.

Lean into the sense of place and buy a Yarn Kit of Tarndwarncoort’s very own non-superwash Polwarth wool. You get to choose your colours during the class (with Mary Jane’s guidance), but we’ll send one ball out to you in advance so you can get started with your homework!

Homework:

With any color fingering-weight yarn you like, CO 48 sts. Place marker, join without twisting for working in the round. Work k1, p1 rib for 1" (2.5 cm).
