Crafty Sundays Nov + Dec 2023
Blur months. It all gets a bit hectic at the end of the year, and so two months of Crafty Sundays has merged into one report! There’s definitely a few nuggets of joy and wisdom not captured - you’ll just have to come along to find them out next time!
Rhonda stunned us with her use of the Naturally Coloured Polwarth Very Fine Yarn to knit two lacewight shawls. One on UK size 14 (2.0mm) needles and another on 5.0mm needles. The 2.0mm one is so consistent with tiny stitches it has the appearance of machine knitted jersey fabric - with the natural variation of greys + browns showing beautifully. The 5.0mm one is cobweb light and a true wedding ring shawl.
Chris’ Pressed Flowers shawl has very well appreciated. Chris was happy to have used a slightly variegated yellow to add a bit of depth, popping out of the commercially dyed Night Garden 8ply. It was a difficult start and Chris would be happy to help anyone who has also found the pattern tricky.
Faye bought silk/cashmere shawls at the op shop for $3.50 and then dyed them in the Tarndie Dye Studio with Eucalyptus cinerea and in the natural indigo vat.
We discussed knitting with two skeins of variegated yarn. If you were using yarnd from an indie dyer (or your very own!) and you wanted to even out the colourway between multiple skeins, or you wanted to avoid pooling, then you could knit alternating rows between two skeins. In a circular knit, mark the start of the row with a stich marker and each time you reach it, carry the second skein upwards on the wrong side of the knitting and start again.
